This fall, the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University will host its first international film festival with a focus on Middle Eastern films. The film festival will screen a wide variety of features, documentaries and shorts from Nov. 12-18.
Charles Salmon, dean of the College of Communication Arts and Sciences, created the film festival as a way to improve communication about Middle Eastern issues, while also providing MSU students and the community with a rich selection of films from around the world.
“The festival is intended to promote understanding of the people, the culture and the issues of the Middle East. In an era when events in the Middle East typically dominate the evening news, it is important now - more than ever - to raise awareness and increase understanding of this area of the world,” Salmon said.
The film festival is open to students and to the public. All films will be shown free of charge in the Communication Arts and Sciences Building. Tickets can be reserved online at http://casiff.elff.com beginning Oct. 20.
Susan W. Woods, director of the East Lansing Film Festival, is working with the college to organize the international film festival, which will focus on different regions of the world each year. This year Woods will show films from Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Lebanon, North Africa, Palestine, Turkey and others. Discussions and seminars also will take place to complement the films.
“We will celebrate this part of the world with film. I hope that people will come away with a deeper understanding of the people and the issues of this region,” Woods said.
The film festival will take place during MSU’s International Education Week set for Nov. 11-19. The festival also will coincide with the culmination of a new fall freshman seminar offered by the college, “Beyond CNN: Inside the Middle East.”
Sponsorships are available to help support the festival. For more information regarding the sponsorships, contact Woods at (517) 336-5802, or Kirsten Khire at (517) 355-3410, .
